Khimji’s Sparkle celebrate the first Omani Tug Masters at Asyad Drydock in Duqm

As part of its ongoing efforts to lend continuous support to national talent and help them realize their true potential, Khimji’s Sparkle Marine Services take pride in announcing their first Omani Tug Masters – Thabit Al Alawi and Sameeh Al Rasadi. This is a first of its kind achievement in the industry. Thabit and Sameeh are currently serving on board the tugboats Dorat Al Behar, Ameerat Al Behar, and Zahrat Al Behar at Asyad Drydock in Duqm.

The tugs stationed at Asyad drydock handle some of the world’s largest oil tankers, gas tankers, ore carriers, container ships, aircraft carriers and submarines, amongst other vessels. The efforts of Khimji’s Sparkle are aimed at skilling individuals to work in critical fields that require advanced skills and extensive training in dealing with various types of giant ships, especially under challenging scenarios.

Over the past seven years, both Sameeh and Thabit have proven their mettle, dedication and willingness to operate as tug masters. They have been exposed to extensive on-the-job training at Duqm and have also been a part of the international training conducted at the Ocean’s Sparkle Tug Simulator Training Center in India.

In the simulator, the tug masters faced various scenarios that included bad weather, engine failure, heavy waves and wind conditions. Such simulations contributed towards enhancing their skills and competencies in handling large vessels and maneuvering them into the dry dock.

Standing tall in the face of challenges, Sameeh and Thabit also exhibited their commitment, and perseverance during the Covid-19 pandemic when a substantial number of Khimji’s Sparkle Staff were unable to commute between regions due to the imposed movement ban. At this critical juncture, the duo rose to the occasion and took on the task of handling the tug operations independently. This reaffirmed confidence in their on-the-job capabilities.

Commenting on this achievement, Pankaj Khimji, Director, Khimji’s Sparkle Marine Services said: “We believe that the youth are the building blocks for a bright future for Oman. Our objectives resonate with the national priorities and the goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040 that aim to create a pool of highly skilled Omani talents. We are delighted with what Sameeh and Thabit have accomplished and admire their persistence and hard work. Realizing this dream would not have been possible without the continuous support of our strategic partners, Asyad Dry Dock and Ocean’s Sparkle.”

Expressing his delight at this accomplishment, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Nadhairi, Chief Executive Officer of Asyad Shipping and Dry Dock, said: “I would like to congratulate both Sameeh and Thabit on earning the title of ‘Tug Masters’. This is a laudable achievement that highlights their capability to take on higher leadership roles. We also commend the efforts exerted by Khimji’s Sparkle team in providing the necessary training for them and giving the Omani youth more opportunities to excel in their fields and lead the Sultanate toward a vibrant future.”

“Being able to develop local capabilities and nurture talents is an indicator of our growing success. Our successful partnership with Khimji’s Sparkle allowed us to witness Sameeh and Thabit grow through the ranks and demonstrate their willingness to learn and adapt to the challenging environments to become the first Omani Tug Masters. We are proud to be a part of this milestone and we wish our comrades the very best in all their future endeavors,” said
P. Kumar Jairaj, Chairman and Managing Director, Ocean Sparkle.
